How Do 6V Actuators Work?
Let's take a closer look at how 6V linear actuators function:
- Power Source: 6V actuators require a 6V power supply for operation. This ensures compatibility with many standard electrical systems in robotics, RC, consumer electronics and more.
- Conversion of Energy: Inside each actuator, there's an electric motor. This motor converts the electrical energy from the power source into mechanical energy.
- Transmission Mechanism: The rotational motion of the motor is converted into linear motion by a lead screw assembly. Linear actuators utilize a gearbox mechanism that can be spec'd to change the power and speed characteristics of the actuator.
- Control System: 6V actuators are equipped with a control mechanism to control the movement of the actuator. This system can vary from simple on/off limit switches to closed-loop position control via microcontroller or RC receiver. Some of our 6V models can also be controlled via PLC.
- Output: The result is a controlled linear motion that can push or pull with varying degrees of force and speed, depending on the actuator's design and the application's requirements.

6V Actuators: Configurations to Meet Your Specifications
Our selection of 6V linear actuators come in a variety of configurations allowing you to accurately tailor your linear motion solution no matter the project. When selecting the ideal actuator for your project, understanding and considering factors like stroke length, gear ratio, backdrive force and maximum load is crucial. Check our Actuator Selector Tool to search by feature and ensure that you get the best device for your needs.
- Stroke Length: Stroke length is the maximum travel that an actuator can achieve, from fully retracted through to fully extended. Our actuators come in stroke lengths from 10mm through to 140mm. Stroke lengths below 10mm can be achieved by using external limit switches, pairing a P-Series actuator with our LAC board, or in some cases, by setting stroke parameters in your controller.
- Gear Ratio: The gear ratio in an actuator is what determines it's speed and force, and it's an inverse relationship. Higher gear ratios allow for more force, but at a lower speed. In the same way, a lower gear ratio results in a faster actuator, with a lower force. Ordering the correct gear ratio for your design is a fundamental step in component selection.
- Backdrive Force: This is the force required to move the actuator when power is not applied. In applications where maintaining position is vital even when the actuator is not powered, a higher backdrive force is advantageous. Actuonix 6V actuators offer varying levels of backdrive force, ensuring you can select an actuator that maintains its position under different conditions.
- Maximum Load: The maximum load capacity indicates the highest force or weight the actuator can handle before stalling. This is a critical factor for ensuring safety and functionality in your project. Actuonix's 6V linear actuators have varied load capacities, making them suitable for a wide range of tasks
