Latching vs Non-Latching: The Practical Difference
The standard 2.54mm pitch connector on most Actuonix rod actuators is non-latching. For bench testing and prototyping, it does the job.
Put that same connector into a mechanism that vibrates, or onto a cable that gets unplugged regularly for servicing, and friction alone may not be enough. A latching connector, the kind Molex is known for, uses a positive lock tab that clicks into place and stays there until deliberately released.
In a moving system, that distinction matters. It is the difference between a connection that holds under load and one that slowly works itself loose.
Keyed housings are another advantage. The connector only goes together one way, which helps prevent polarity errors during assembly. On a production line building the same harness repeatedly, that is worth specifying.
Getting the Electrical Spec Right
Actuonix actuators ship with connectors sized for each model's operating requirements. The standard connector on the L12 handles the stall current draw of 246mA at 12V. The L16's connector is rated for its 650mA stall draw.
The electrical side is taken care of from the factory. The situation changes for OEM designs where the actuator needs to plug into a harness that already uses a specific connector family. In that case, current rating should be confirmed against stall current, not just running current.
Pin count is the other variable. A two-wire S-series actuator needs only power and ground. The L12-I carries six leads split across two connectors covering power, ground, position feedback, and three control input modes.
Wire Gauge and Grommet Considerations
Crimp terminals have an AWG range and an insulation diameter they are built to work with. A mismatch on either can produce an unreliable joint regardless of the connector brand.
There is also a fixed grommet through-hole at the cable exit point on Actuonix actuators. It provides strain relief and works correctly within a certain wire diameter range. If you are considering a connector that uses a noticeably different wire gauge, it is best to flag that when you contact us.
